ike yard recombine their music looking across decades of post punk, electronic, soundtracks and come out with some of their best yet and enough to last the next 20-30 years (in ike yard s very own words). originally founded in 1979 new york city, members michael diekmann (keyboard, guitar, vocals), kenneth compton (programming drums, synths arrangements, bass, guitar, vocals) and stuart argabright (programming drums, synths arrangements, distortion bass, keyboards, metal perc) reformed the band once in 2007 and again in 2010. each time different and with new ambitions. this time ‘sacred machine’ ep is defined by detailed drum layers supported by multiple basses and keyboards, some off-timing beat patterns that turn in a second of synchrony into a straight four on the floor kick and first time vocal collaborations.

hot on the heels of the first two parts comes part three of hoshs stories from sa talaia series. the series takes tracks from his recently released album of the same name and releases them on his new fryhide label. first up are two collaborations with pig&dan. atlantis is not a fairy tale, a spine tingling tune with shifting melodies above rolling rubber beats. it s emotive and colourful and sets a nice mood to start off. the second brotherhood balearea is deep and elastic, with nice rubber beats and spraying synths bringing some real dynamism to the table. one of those tunes sven väth would drop at those special ibiza after parties. awakening of the birds a collaboration with karmon takes off right there and keeps you in that trance but gets more groovy with its inducing light footed drums, airy hi hats and skyward melodies all zoning you out. last of all, meeting mia lee is a beautifully melodic track that really moves you and strikes a resonant chord with your heart as the smooth and deep house vibes unfold. speaking of heart it features the heartbeat of hoshs unborn daughter. once again then, this is another richly rewarding ep from the one and only hosh.

on the a-side things start of with “inityiat” which simply can be seen as a distorted form of “initiation”. starting of hypnotic, the track slowly progresses adding a plethora of subtle percussive elements. an ethnic and mysterious chanting complements the latter throughout the sonic voyageand caters for a promising start. part two of the a-side, “hata isler”, takes off where “inityiat” ended, but amplified in strength. subliminal voices manipulated harmoniously into the pads are mixed with sophisticated alternations of snares and hats. the result: a perfect continuation of the spirit the first track. side b commences with “insan”, a title that serves the track right. straight forward, upgrading the tempo of the previous tracks into a drive that’s impossible to resist. the maelstrom of drones and soundscapes on a layer of thundering sounds, induce a new stage of sonic hypnosis, until it gradually phases out into silence. “tzotzil” on the other hand is a skillfuly crafted tooltrack that’s build around a glooming and reverbing baseline.

breaking his silence after twenty years, sebastian snoeck a.k.a sebastian s. will be the second member of belgian collective “bwp experiments” to release on the basic moves imprint. he has handed over two previously unpublished tracks made under the moniker caustic 14. after listening to “personal space invader” in 1997, carl craig asked sebastian s. to produce new material for his own label, planet e. “message in a box” and “rising star” were therefore made as a response to this request. however, due to a political transatlantic rift the tracks never saw the light of day and have since been stored on dat tapes, hidden away from the general public’s ears. if i had to describe sebastian’s output, i’d say it is most importantly energetic, positive, and groovy. it bears the mark of a certain nostalgia, shying away from the blind celebration of both futurism and experimentation in order to reach intemporality. this attempt to exist outside of time gives his productions a certain character and in my opinion his music has come to embody something i like to call “space opera techno”. sebastian s has succeeded where many before him have failed: by avoiding copycat tactics and simplified approaches to production he managed to create a singular identity. the tracks are recognisable after the first few seconds – and that’s what makes his work so unique!

iron curtis is back on hudd traxx with the second installment of his lights ep. much like the first round that dropped earlier in the year, the man like johannes paluka is on sterling form, dealing in the kind of refined yet earthen, deep but punchy house music hes built his name on to date. spectral is the consummate opener, deft piano chords and rock solid drums with additional dubby fx pulsing through the mix. well well well is a sunnier affair aiming for that euphoric terrace moment, while see ya brings a rough swing to the party with a cosy, intimate line in soulful sample licks. l&p finishes the ep off with a warm, acidic bassline and more of that deep diving beatdown business.

mark and clive ives have been prime examples of the second life reissue culture can give previously under-appreciated artists, and emotional rescue have been one of the key labels to support the enigmatic brothers from london. as with previous reissues, -a la luna- presents the delicate, naive yet deep sound of woo across a long form album that invites you on a curious journey of discovery. with a melodic instinct bordering on exotica, and unique range of instruments in the sound palette and a dreamlike approach to processing, there s nothing out there that sounds quite like woo, and as ever it s a joy to delve into their sound world and leave more earthly familiarities behind.

hybrid techno tracks full of tension on time to express number 30, presented by label founder peter van hoesen. the belgian producer takes up the opportunity to expand upon his previous work on the coast to coast ep. no longer exclusively restricted to straight 4/4 rhythms, van hoesen s music investigates hybrid, broken grooves infused with a clear sense of spatial sonic awareness. this is made clear with the first two tracks, towards manifestation and fox tactics. on the second half of the ep van hoesen launches two solid techno cuts, shifting from dense bassline work (concrete varition) to percussive, shuffling grooves (fox tactics). as with all previous time to express outings a specific i ching hexagram was chosen to accompany this release. hexagram #10 ( treading upon the tail of the tiger ) refers to advancement with care and ways of respectful progress. the title of the ep is a direct reference to the first line of this intriguing hexagram. nine at the beginning will be released on vinyl and digital formats on october 23rd 2017. a specially designed t-shirt will be made available at the same time, interpreting hexagram #10 through its design.

harry miller aka glow in the dark is neither to be found on any social media channel nor can you google anything about him, let alone does he maintain a website. the man hides completely behind his music and quite obviously in his studio. after his debut in february earlier this year, now already a few months later, his second album drops, “into existence.”

ltd repress !! in dust we trust are back with their second 12- of 2017. this time the two entities, chaos in the cbd and jon sable, offer one side each. on side a, false awakening by chaos in the cbd attacks your brain with open, spacious pads and synthesised melodies that float on top of a dark and hypnotic percussive groove ù the kind that might make you miss your stop because you ve found yourself staring into space. on the flip side you have scumbag unity by jon sable, a loose dreamy track with dubbed-out pads and vocals that glide between a drum machine groove. this marks the second collaboration between jon sable and kroba of archie pelago, who plays the woozy basement-style saxophone that keeps your consciousness hooked. serious tip for those drawn to the deeper side of dance floor-ready records.

repitch’s latest releases is a full-on acid assault, a distorted analog techno speedwagon driven by label co-founder d.carbone along with panzerkreuz affiliate and rave veteran albert van abbe. side a is composed of two tracks produced by van abbe and paul van ghent under the guise of his most unapologetic acid project penik etteck. recorded between 1998 and 2000, it is a duo of incendiary bangers made for no other purpose than pumping energy into the rave. on the flip side, van abbe’s youngest project datasmok sides with d.carbone for two more tracks ripe with acid basslines, heavily distorted drums, and noisy drones, speeding up the tempo on the first one and slowing it down on the second in order to explore the many dynamic possibilities of raving.

after releasing space control an intergalactic journey into synthesizers, back in 2012, the theremynt duo went on to release a successful, if steady, stream of eps, including robotique de l amou r and vampiros discos (a tribute to brazilian filmmaker ze do caixao). with remixes coming from the likes of david carretta, acid washed and club bizarre, these were playlisted by scene djs such as marvin & guy and ivan smagghe, amongst others. now yann and eva are striking back with their second lp, parallels. it s a record that sees them changing their colour palette and mood, but one that s still haunted by ghosts that lurk within their synthesizers and drum machines. the 10 tracks still exhibit peel s ever shifting vocal style and yann s sophisticated arrangements. but the second lp oscillates between ballad and dancefloor, landing between cosmic disco influences, krautrock and other progressive techno sounds. as a bonus, the album also features a cover of famous 80 s anthem self control.
